Long-Haul Locomotive Full Horsepower Rated Dual-Fuel LNG Conversion
The Challenge
Converting an EMD engine from diesel to natural gas comes at the expense of power and efficiency, leading conversion to be impractical in locomotive applications.
Our Solution
With the installation of a special dual-fuel fuel injector and electric controller, the EMD engine was able to run at full power, with lower emissions and lower cost of operation.

Work being performed on one of the on-site power gensets.
Due to the lower cost of natural gas compared to diesel fuel, Burlington Northern had already invested in converting an EMD powered locomotive to run on natural gas. The developed solution was not ready for rail, with the engine derated too far for it to be useful. They needed a solution that allowed for the use of natural gas without significantly derating the engine, more suited to long freight hauls.
